There are literally millions of bingo players in the UK frequenting the many clubs that are littered all over the country in each town and almost every village.
Why is bingo so popular and why do so many people journey out of their homes each week to play a game based purely of the luck of the draw?
We look at a few reasons that bingo in the UK has become so popular.
Bingo halls, certainly the smaller ones, are used very much for social interaction with other players. Many people who regularly frequent their local bingo club are doing so because they see bingo, in many cases, as their only real touch with people and it gives them the chance to meet friends and make new ones.
Lots of players come from backgrounds that require them to stay at home for much of the day or go to work and going to the local bingo hall for a few hours gives them the chance to get out of the house during non-restrictive times and take part in an enjoyable pastime. Many players are widows or carers who use bingo as a release from tedious situations and let them add a little spice to their lives. Others are full time Mums (or Dads) who manage to get out for a break when their partner comes home or when it’s easier to get a babysitter.
Of course, the other major appeal of playing bingo is that it’s a fairly inexpensive pastime. It doesn’t cost a small fortune to sit down and play and therefore makes it affordable for most people who play in moderation. Sure the rewards are normally small but it’s still a form of cheap entertainment.
Social interaction is required by everyone and for those who are restricted in any way, want to meet new people or just while away a few hours in an enjoyable atmosphere, a few hours in their local club is a way to ease the tension or strains of the day.
